Through awareness, we can learn to move with astonishing lightness and freedom at almost any age – Moshe Feldenkrais
Cath Greenwood, Feldenkrais practitioner based in South East London
Feldenkrais is a practice that helps us explore possibilities for improved physical organisation and ease of movement. It is great for flexibility, balance and learning to move with greater efficiency, comfort and self-knowledge. Through noticing our habitual ways of moving we can explore and learn new ways to move through the world.
Moshe Feldenkrais, a physicist, engineer and judo master, devised the method in response to his own knee injury. He set out to explore how to heal himself through his knowledge of neuroscience, biomechanics, psychology, engineering and martial arts.
People come to Feldenkrais for a wide range of reasons. The method can help with:
- Fluid, easy movement at every age
- Pain relief and recovery from injury
- Support for neurological conditions
- Skills for dancers, musicians, actors, athletes
- Calmness and well-being
- Pressures of modern living – stress, desk-based work
Feldenkrais can be experienced as part of group ATM (Awareness Through Movement) class or in a one-to-one FI (Functional Integration) lesson.
